Narrative in Music Videos (Andrea)

There are three main types of music video's:
performance
narrative and
concept based.

Narrative based: music videos present a story which is seen throughout the video, the narrative develops and link to the lyrics of the song presenting a message or theme across to the audience.

The narrative which is portrayed in the song does not tell the full story, it only gives hints of what is roughly going on, often leaving the audeince to think of an ending themselves. It could be considered as poetry, complex and containing loads of hidden meanings and intertextual refferences, sometimes even going with a non linear storyline, leaving the viewer with the desire to see them again.

Often, the narrative is accompanied by a band performance, giving the viewer the opportunity to whitness the best of both words as the narrative covers the actions and the performance- the emotions brought by the song, namely transfers them to the audience. Additionally, a dance might be a part of the artists performance or other extra aspects like ''repetability''.

The video brings better access to the performance of the artists than ''real-live'' concerts, becouse of the close ups, direct eye contact and variety of angles of view. This gives a sense of authenticity as if we are experiencing this experience with the audeince.

The mise en scene, can be used as a guarantee of 'authenticity' of a band if the scenes are shot on a stage or a performance room, as this brings up the ''notion of looking''. It can also be assosiated with ''sexuality'' if the scenes are set in nightclubs or bars with dark lighing.

Some of the most memorable music videos have had strong narratives and often they encourage the viewer to want to see the video more than once as they enjoy following the narrative along with the artist. They also offer the viewer the chance to see their favoured artist in a different role whilst still offering plenty of opportunity to see close-ups and exclusive performances.

After making these notes, we have made the decision to create our music video as a combination of narrative and performance, by doing this our ideas will be more clearly put across to our target audience.
