Target Audience (Kalina and Andrea)

Target Audience

Our chosen genre often targets people which like going against the mainstream society, they make their own rules and are not known to deal very well with responsibilities. These types of people are more clearly defined by this reductionist summary, made by people in the advertising and commercial business, in order to help them target their audience and meet their desires and expectations.

We have considered the story (narrative) of our music video (which is going to be explained in more detail in the next post), which has a happy ending to a touching, sad, love story, The Struggler would not fit completely, that is why another type of person that could be interested in our video is The Reformer:

Narrative in Music Videos (Andrea)

There are three main types of music video's:
performance
narrative and
concept based.

Narrative based: music videos present a story which is seen throughout the video, the narrative develops and link to the lyrics of the song presenting a message or theme across to the audience.

The narrative which is portrayed in the song does not tell the full story, it only gives hints of what is roughly going on, often leaving the audeince to think of an ending themselves. It could be considered as poetry, complex and containing loads of hidden meanings and intertextual refferences, sometimes even going with a non linear storyline, leaving the viewer with the desire to see them again.

Often, the narrative is accompanied by a band performance, giving the viewer the opportunity to whitness the best of both words as the narrative covers the actions and the performance- the emotions brought by the song, namely transfers them to the audience. Additionally, a dance might be a part of the artists performance or other extra aspects like ''repetability''.

The video brings better access to the performance of the artists than ''real-live'' concerts, becouse of the close ups, direct eye contact and variety of angles of view. This gives a sense of authenticity as if we are experiencing this experience with the audeince.

The mise en scene, can be used as a guarantee of 'authenticity' of a band if the scenes are shot on a stage or a performance room, as this brings up the ''notion of looking''. It can also be assosiated with ''sexuality'' if the scenes are set in nightclubs or bars with dark lighing.

Some of the most memorable music videos have had strong narratives and often they encourage the viewer to want to see the video more than once as they enjoy following the narrative along with the artist. They also offer the viewer the chance to see their favoured artist in a different role whilst still offering plenty of opportunity to see close-ups and exclusive performances.

After making these notes, we have made the decision to create our music video as a combination of narrative and performance, by doing this our ideas will be more clearly put across to our target audience.

Discussion on genre

After spending time on research of the PUNK/ROCK genre (our chosen one), we noticed that there are differences in the genre expectations. As our song is meant to be a hybrid between the two, as the music could be considered as similar, the visuals are easily distinguished. for example the PUNK videos have bright colours (Sum 41 and Blink 182), a silly look, where the artists often make fun of themselves and act rebellious, but in a non-violent, more casual way. On the other hand, the ROCK genre is more known to be dark and a bit depressing, deep and emotional (''My Chemical Romance'').

Taking this into consideration, we have decided to make our video hybrid all the way, not just
music- wise, containing typical genre expectations of both PUNK and ROCK. This will give us more freedom in the video-making and will help us target a wider audience.

The contrast is clear.

Permission

Above is the e-mail, asking for permission to use our chosen song, which we send to Marianas Trench's manager. Unfortunately we have not recieved a reply so far, but we are thinking positively and hoping for the best.

The history of the music video

During a lesson in class we watched a docummentary 'The history of the music video'. The docummentary showed the devlopment of the music video over the years from when they were first discovered to just recently. The docummentary proved that a lot has changed since the early days of when they were first producded.

1920's- talkies were invented, the first version of the music video. (videos without sound, only images).

1950's music videos were produced with colour, the inspiration taken from colour musicals.
1955- creation of the ''teenager'' (Elvis Presley)

1960s-The Beatles ''Hard Day's Night''
Extracts From The Album A Hard Day's Night EP artwork - United Kingdom
1967- Music starts appearing on TV. (Variety Show).
1979- Pop Clips(TV programme) showing music clips.
1980s-Mike Nesbitt (The Monkeys) starts collecting videos, because otherwise they just vanish. Then came up with the idea of MTV.

1981-MTV appeared.

1st music video- ''Video Killed The Radio Star'', ironic isn't it?

Music videos first appeared on the television in 1967. MTV was launched as a music channel, however they had a very limitted amount of videos, only 200 which would not have been enough to make a channel. Artisits used MTV to promote their videos for example The Beatles have utilized music vidoes to promotes their records starting in the mid 60's.  The creative use of music videos within their 1964 debut film A Hard Day's Night, particularly the performance of "Can't Buy Me Love", led MTV decades later to honor the film's director, Richard Lester, with an award for "basically inventing" the music video.

1985-Music videos become available in shops.
Early 90s MTV started diversifying into a youth program, including programmes such as:

Beavis and Butthead, JackAss and other reality TV shows, such as The Osbornes.

2001- MTV Dance was introduced.

Today music channels are devided into specific genres.

    Lyrics:

    Please sing to me,
I can see you open up to breathe.
Fast words make it easier on me,
If the point is to never disappoint you,
Somebodies got to tell me what to do.
Just wish you could've seen me
When it used to come so easy.
I like to say it's easy to stay
    But it's not for me,
Cause I'm barely here at all.

Slow down now, the secrets out.
And I swear now everything is perfect.
What you want, what you need has been killing me.
Try to be everything that you want me to be.
I say yes, I'll undress, I've done more for less.
Now I'll change everything until it's perfect again.

    Coming down, coming around,
Giving a frown to the sound when I hit ground.
I hate the way that I say I should say
When I know that I don't give a fuck about it anyway.
Shake hands, and shoot smiles all around,
As I sell my body by the pound.
Sign my name on the dotted line,
It would be fate, to not resuscitate.

Slow down now, the secrets out.
And I swear now I'll still make this perfect.
What you want, what you need has been killing me.
Try to be everything that you want me to be.
I say yes, I'll undress, I'll do more for less.
Now I'll change everything till it's perfect again.

I think it's better this way,
This is good in a bad way.
    It's better this way.
    I'll make this perfect again.
    I'll make this perfect again.

What you want, what you need has been killing me.
And I will change everything you want me to be.
I say yes, I'll undress, I'll do more for less.
Now I'll change everything, whoa yeah.
What you want, what you need has been killing me.
    (I'll make this perfect again.)
Try to be everything that you want me to be.
I say yes, I'll undress, I'll do more for less.
Now I'll change everything, I'll make this perfect again.

    Lyrics:

    Walk home
Drowning these memories in the rain
    Biting my lip
    To transfer this pain

    You're gone
And I'm still going through withdrawl
    Next time around
    I'll build a stronger wall

You broke my guard with guiltless eyes
Divide me like a virus from inside
And came back just to salt the wounds
    Now thanks to you...

    I start runnin now
(I start runnin, I'm runnin away from you)
    I start runnin away
When I get too close I'm scared to stay
    I start runnin now
(I start runnin, I'm runnin away from you)
    I start runnin away
Now others pay for your mistakes

    You needed
    More attention than I gave
    Instead of talking
    You just played games

    And smiled
As my whole world became unstitched
    I wish I'd known
You would be such a heartless bitch

You broke my guard with guiltless eyes
Divide me like a virus from inside
And came back just to salt the wounds
    Now thanks to you...

    I start runnin now
(I start runnin, I'm runnin away from you)

    I start runnin now
(I start runnin, I'm runnin away from you)
    I start runnin away
When I get too close I'm scared to stay

We have come to the decision that we will use our first choice 'Perfect' Marianas Trench. The plus side of choosing this song is that it has no original video, therefore the audience wouldn't assosiate the original with our video and we won't have the tendancy to keep looking back at it and copy certain elements.

    Video analysis (Kalina)

For our music video analysis we have  chosen a variety of genres, which will give us a wider knowledge of the typical codes and conventions of the genres.

    Sum 41- In Too Deep

This used to be my favourite song a long time ago and brings back many good memories. In Too Deep is a perfect example of the boyish and laid-back style of Sum 41. The genre is punk, going to rock and as we see this video goes against some of the general assumptions we have made for this style, mainly dark colours, performance based, gothic look, and acts of aggression. Surprisingly, the video contains bright colours and is set up around a pool, probably summer time, which makes the video have a cheerful vibe. On the other hand, we would expect acts of rebellion, going against the norms of society, which is exactly what we witness.

The relationship between lyrics and visuals is not very strong, but noticeable. The words speak about a love story where the guy (members of the band) doesn't want to fall In Too Deep in love with a girl. In the video we see something else- the band is performing in an empty swimming pool and parallel taking part in a ''high jump into the pool'' competition. The lyrics could be taken literally, where ''in too deep'' means - in the water:

'''Couse I'm in too deep and I'm trying to keep

up above in my head instead of going under'',

which is also indicated by the scenes when they jump in but always come out of the water. The part where they sing ''Just as things were looking up, you said i wasn't good enough'', is represented by the jury giving them scores and even when they weren't very high, the band members didn't give up and tried again, bringing humour and silliness to the situation, which is supposedly the message they want to send across- that although we all have our sad and maybe painful moments, we should always take them with a smile and humour, and make the most out of them. There are links to ''attraction'' (love would be too strong in this case) between two people, linking to the lyrics. For example, when one of the band members is about to jump, a girl from the crowd winks at him and shows interest, he responds and then jumps. The same references to the love story are found in the actions of the other members of the swimming team, which are represented as being gay and receiving attention from other men, of course in a funny, not offensive way.

The relationship between the music and the visuals is mainly contradictive because of the style of the editing. Although the video cuts to the beat most of the times there is one moment at the end of the video, for example, when the last member of the band is jumping, the cuts are off beat because the narrative is more important and shouldn't be divided by these cuts in order to get the message across. Also the music is quite dynamic, whereas in the editing we see a lot of shots put in slow motion, to emphasise the funny movements and people's reactions. The solo instruments are well illustrated: before the guitar solo, one of the members jumps (not making a very good impression) but then come out of the water fully clothed, playing on the guitar (the solo), the crowd goes wild and everybody is fascinated. There are a lot of shots emphasising on the instruments, the most frequent sync between the music and visuals is made with the drums, which boosts up the energy of the video.

The notion  of looking is presented in two ways. The first one is putting the other swimming team on a sexual display, wearing tight red swimsuits and using gestures like slapping each other on the back side as a sign of encouragement (which is one of the very first scenes). The other one is using the crowd( which is watching the jump competition) to make us feel part of them, making us watch. Same effect has the role of the judges.

This music video is a combination between performance and narrative based. Performance, because the band is playing in an empty swimming pool, surrounded by a crowd and this contains all the expected features- close ups of the lead singer and the musical instruments (mainly drums), a lot of jumping and a tilt camera shot, plus there is an emphasis on the girls in the crowd and some of their body parts. Narrative, because the rest of the video is based on a, silly looking, trampoline jumping competition and how the band members manage to win, going against the rules and norms of society (which is meant to be their image).

Overall, the video could be considered to represent the PUNK spirit of rebellion in a comic and appealing to the audience way. As we assumed, there are general features of a punk video: the close ups of artists and musical instruments as well as the references to the notion of looking, represented both by putting actors on sexual display and by using the crowd, which is watching both the performance and the narrative part. There were not many dark colours, but this is because of the more cheerful style of the band more than the genre features.

    Music video textual analysis (Andrea)

    21 guns-Green Day

I will be analysing ’21 guns’ by Green Day, which is a single from their album 21st Century Breakdown. The single was released on 25th May 2009 as a digital download and then July 14th as a CD single. The music video was directed by Marc Webb and filmed in Los Angeles.  The genre of the music video is alternative rock. The song addresses the topic of patriotism; it brings up the 21st century breakdown in a lot of ways, and the 21 gun salute for someone that’s fallen. This song is much slower compared to other Green Day songs addressing a very serious topic.

The video is set in an ordinary white room. The colours used are black, whites and reds suggesting a serious/ reflective mood. The video starts off with very slow music while the protagonist Christian is looking at a bullet, the music reflects all the thoughts running through his head, as he is over thinking about past events. Then the music suddenly begins to get louder as a close up of the bullet is shown, suggesting pain and the bullet could be the reason for this. The video then cuts to car lights which look like they are approaching the viewer on the screen, this is very mysterious and questions the viewer what is happening/ happened? The bullet drops and then the band begins to sing.

We first see a close up of Christian singing, he is wearing very heavy eye makeup and he is dressed in black, this reflects the genre of rock, all band members look very serious giving blank facial expressions. We then see Gloria the girl looking out of the blinds, red lights flash onto her from the police car suggesting danger, maybe she is the reason behind all of this? The lyrics also reflect the mood for example ‘worth dying for’ suggesting pain and distraught, Gloria looks at Christian showing that he is worth dying for. The room is very messy and untidy suggesting broken hearts.  Bullets fire through the walls and the sofa showing they have given up ‘throw up your arms’, and the fish tank breaks killing the fish. Feathers drop as they kiss symbolising the couples everlasting love for each other. Towards the end of the music video the lighting changes to a red/purple colour showing they are back together, suggesting the colours of love and intimacy.

The video cuts to the beat of the music every time the beat drops, the drums and guitar are used when the scene changes from either the band performing or to the narrative which describes what is being sung. The video also changes pace with the music, when the song reaches the chorus the song gets louder and close ups of instruments are shown being used passionately- reflecting the very passionate moment, everything is now shown faster. For example when the chorus begins bullets are fired through the wall in sync with the beat of the drums and guitar. However in the final chorus, when the video shows us that the couple are back together the guitarist of the group is shown in the middle of the room, and we shown a panorama of him strumming on the guitar alone. This scene is delicate and therefore the pace is a lot slower.

The notion of looking is not as extreme as other music videos, however the use of mirrors and screens replace this. We see the protagonist looking through the broken mirror many times. Both the male and female protagonist look at their  reflections in the mirror through the broken glass.

The image we get from the band is a rocky look. All members are dressed in dark colours mainly black and grey, they are dressed in shirts and leather jackets. The setting of the music video also suggest the genre of rock, everything is black, white and grey, with black writing on the wall. Each band member has a sleeve tattoo which is very common in the rock genre, giving them a serious, edgy kind of look. The band members are all seen wearing heavy eye make-up and messy long hair.

The music video is both performance and narrative based. The band are performing the song in the middle of the room, while the narrative is being shown around them. Close ups of instruments are shown while the band are performing. However the music video is mainly narrative based, as the viewer follows the story through the duration of them performing the song.
